Job Summary

The City of Mesa seeks a highly skilled Government Relations Manager to coordinate, develop, and implement the City's intergovernmental relations program. This professional-level position represents the City's interests with various government agencies and officials, working as an advocate of the City's positions on issues before the U.S. Congress, State Legislature, and regional government boards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other municipalities, tribal governments, and special interest groups throughout Arizona.
  • Brief elected officials, City Manager, and senior management on complex municipal and community issues.
  • Research and develop recommendations on Citywide issues, pending legislation, and other administrative issues.
  • Serve as a constituent liaison, ensuring City responsiveness to constituent inquiries and suggestions.
  • Interpret federal, state, and City statutes, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Monitor Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), County, Valley Metro, and Arizona Municipal Water Users Association activities and provide reports to the Government Relations Director, Assistant City Manager, and City Manager.
  • Prepare and make comprehensive presentations to a variety of audiences, performing complex, confidential, and sensitive assignments.
  • Act as a City Public Lobbyist, filing required reports with the Secretary of State.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Business Management, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in government relations or comparable professional-level administrative experience in a public sector setting.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.

The Government Relations Manager receives administrative direction from the Government Relations Director, who reviews work through conferences, reports, and overall results achieved.
