About the Position

The University of Minnesota's Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts is seeking qualified candidates to teach courses in creative writing. The position is part of the Creative Writing Program, which occasionally needs lecturers or teaching specialists to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty members or graduate students. This search will establish a pool of instructors for potential openings during the 2024/25 academic year.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach classes to help students learn effectively
  • Create Canvas course sites and syllabi that meet department and university policies
  • Stay current with professional knowledge in the field of creative writing
  • Hold regular office hours and respond to student needs and questions professionally and in a timely manner
  • Evaluate student learning and assign grades
  • Communicate instructor evaluation process to students
  • Understand and follow relevant university policies and procedures
  • Participate in departmental meetings and submit annual review materials
Qualifications

Lecturer:

  • Required qualifications: MFA or PhD, minimum one year college teaching experience in designated field
  • Preferred qualifications: Two or more years college teaching experience, broad familiarity with creative writing and literature, one published book

Teaching Specialist:

  • Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree, minimum one year college teaching experience in designated field
  • Preferred qualifications: M.A. degree in English or closely related field, two or more years college teaching experience, broad familiarity with creative writing and literature, one published book

Applicants with a BA or MA will be hired as teaching specialists; applicants with an MFA or PhD will be hired as lecturers.
