Job Overview

The individual in this role is responsible for providing essential administrative support and technical assistance to library patrons at the main library or its branches.

Key responsibilities include delivering exceptional customer service at the circulation desk, aiding patrons in finding library resources, managing the check-in and check-out of library materials, issuing library cards, collecting fines, preparing materials for shelving, creating library displays, responding to reference inquiries, and assisting patrons with library technology, including computers and printers.

This position requires a high level of public interaction, necessitating a courteous and tactful demeanor. While employees may focus on specific tasks, they should be equipped to address inquiries regarding the full range of library services.

Some staff members may also undertake specialized tasks within their library area, such as managing serials and publications, ordering supplies, and removing outdated materials.


Working Hours:
Monday-Thursday, 3:45-7:15. Starting pay is $17.21 per hour

Key Responsibilities

Deliver customer service at the circulation desk; respond to general information requests; provide information about library programs and services; clarify library policies for patrons, including interlibrary loan, hours of operation, and circulation policies; handle phone inquiries, direct calls, and take messages.

Manage the check-in and check-out of books, DVDs, and other library materials; reserve items; assist patrons with reader's advisory, general reference inquiries, and locating various library resources.

Calculate and collect overdue fines and fees for lost or damaged items; handle cash transactions, process checks and credit card payments; maintain and balance the cash drawer; prepare daily financial deposits.

Assist patrons with internet access, computer usage, copiers, and printers; help locate information and materials using library computers.
Register patrons for library cards; issue new and replacement cards.
Contribute to the planning and execution of educational library programs.

Design, create, and maintain visual displays and bulletin boards to promote literacy and library programs; ensure the library's overall appearance is inviting; assist in the development of marketing materials, flyers, and seasonal decorations.

Organize books and materials for return to shelves; assess the condition of items and repair damaged books and materials; shelve books and arrange materials in the correct order.

Regularly check shelves for accuracy; straighten books and materials on shelves.
Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the circulation desk and other library areas.
May have specific assignments such as sorting book donations and coordinating special library events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General understanding of circulation and cataloging systems used in libraries, as well as various types of informational materials available.

Familiarity with books, reference materials, periodicals, audio-visual resources, and other materials available for acquisition.
Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials, and practices.
Familiarity with the library's filing system and various types of informational materials in both main and branch facilities.

Proficient in using computers, printers, and other library equipment, with the ability to instruct patrons on their use.
Ability to follow established procedures and utilize standard library methods and principles in circulation and reference services.
Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, patrons, and the public.
Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively, even with frequent interruptions.

Skill in dealing tactfully and courteously with library patrons of diverse ages and backgrounds.


Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and general public service experience sufficient to meet the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the library department

A part-time employee working less than 1000 hours per year. No additional benefits.


A part-time employee working more than 1000 hours but less than 1560 hours will automatically participate in the North Carolina Local Government Retirement System.
