Position Summary:
The Radiation Therapist is responsible for administering ionizing radiation to patients across various age groups, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations, following the directives of the Radiation Oncologist and under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately deliver the prescribed radiation therapy regimen with minimal oversight.
- Verify patient prescriptions, diagnoses, and identification.
- Clearly explain treatment procedures to patients, including communication methods during therapy and emergency protocols.
- Reinforce the Radiation Oncologist's guidance regarding treatment reactions and patient care.
- Prepare treatment rooms and equipment according to specifications, including immobilization devices and safety measures.
- Safely transfer patients to treatment couches, ensuring care for any medical devices.
- Monitor treatment duration and deliver the prescribed radiation dose.
- Maintain continuous communication with patients throughout the treatment process.
- Observe and document patient responses, reporting any unusual reactions to nursing staff or the Radiation Oncologist.
- Adhere to radiation safety protocols for both patients and staff.
- Conduct simulations and assist in tumor localization and dosimetry procedures.
- Obtain and present weekly port films for review by the Radiation Oncology team.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Completion of a 24-month program in radiology technology and a 12-month program in radiation therapy technology; or
- Completion of a 24-month program in radiation therapy technology; or
- Registered nurses who have completed a 12-month course in radiation therapy technology; or
- A Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.
Experience:
- Minimum of one year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.
Licensure and Certification:
- Current licensure as mandated by state or national authorities and/or certification in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Maintain ARRT certification with a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in operating radiation therapy equipment.
- Understanding of human anatomy and patient positioning for effective treatment delivery.
- Ability to perform CPR in emergency situations.
