Position Overview
As a vital member of the surgical team, the Surgical Services Technician operates under the guidance of operating room leadership. This role is essential in coordinating patient care within the surgical environment and ensuring that all equipment, instruments, and supplies are prepared and maintained on the sterile field. The technician is responsible for utilizing both simple and complex medical equipment, ensuring cleanliness and readiness of all surgical tools and materials to uphold high standards of patient care. Participation in quality assurance programs and customer service initiatives is also a key aspect of this position. The technician will manage specimens and surgical counts meticulously and serve as a subject matter expert for specific surgical services, monitoring the surgical schedule for equipment and supply requirements, and ensuring daily case readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborates effectively with surgeons to address the specialized needs of surgical patients, fostering trusting relationships to achieve optimal surgical outcomes.
  • Adjusts personal and departmental schedules flexibly to meet operational demands, utilizing time efficiently.
  • Maintains an aseptic environment during surgical procedures, demonstrating a strong understanding of instrument and equipment usage as per established standards.
  • Ensures adherence to safe practices in line with national safety goals and organizational policies, promptly reporting any noncompliance issues.
  • Regularly updates and maintains preference cards, ensuring all team members are informed of any changes.
  • Builds and nurtures collaborative relationships with a multidisciplinary team to effectively support patient care needs.
  • Engages in discussions regarding supply utilization and new equipment evaluations, contributing to cost containment and waste reduction efforts.
  • Participates in the training and support of team members, volunteers, and students, fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Assists the perioperative registered nurse and the surgical team in patient care, ensuring accurate management of specimens and surgical counts, while addressing customer needs promptly.
Qualifications

Education
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program (Preferred)
Experience
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in surgical technology (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Licensed Surgical Technologist in Virginia (Required)
  • CPR/BLS Certification from an accredited organization (Required)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery certification (Required)
