Overview:

Pharmacy Technicians play a crucial role in supporting Clinical Pharmacists by delivering pharmacy services with dedication, precision, and care.

Key Responsibilities:


• Uphold the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Execute only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct oversight of a pharmacist.

Operational Duties:

• Assist Pharmacists in compiling Medication Histories.

• Mentor Pharmacy Technician I associates.

• Prepare medication orders as per physician requests in accordance with established protocols.

• Accurately verify computerized patient medication records and maintain comprehensive patient drug records.

• Compound pharmaceuticals, including both non-sterile and sterile products, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition products with precision.

• Distribute controlled substances to patient care areas while adhering to legal and institutional record-keeping requirements.

• Deliver services efficiently and promptly.

• Ensure daily departmental activities are completed and documented.

• Maintain the necessary competencies for the current job title/position.

• Keep current technician licensure and ensure continuing education records are up to date in departmental files. Participate in staff meetings.

• Maintain IV certification and competencies.

• Fulfill all competency and skills assessment requirements.

• Specialty Areas:

• Act as the technician in specialized settings such as the operating room, IV room, or other pharmacy areas outside the central pharmacy.

• Ambulatory Care:

• Provide ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, and discharge medication reconciliation.

• Retail:

• Perform outpatient distribution functions related to entering prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refilled prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or delivery.

Clinical Duties:

• Ensure safe, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapies for patients in line with established policies and protocols.

• Accurately read, extract, and interpret information from patient medical records.

• Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions in a timely manner.

• Sustain the hospital drug formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements while promoting rational drug therapy selection.

• Provide accurate and timely drug information to pharmacy associates.

• Coordinate pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families according to institutional protocols.

• Engage in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collect data, conduct monitoring and inspections, and maintain logs and records as assigned.

• Execute designated interventions as outlined in departmental Clinical Intervention activities (IV to PO, Renal Dosing, Pharmacokinetic dosing support, Anticoagulation).

• Establish departmental standards for reporting clinical productivity interventions as defined by departmental goals.

• Deliver services efficiently and promptly.

Occupational Hazards:

• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic agents, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions), as well as risks associated with needles and other sharp instruments.

• Risk category 0 exposure.

• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not utilized. Possible exposure to biological materials during direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).

Qualifications:

Education/Skills:


• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience:


• 3-5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.


• Must meet all criteria for Pharmacy Technician I.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:


• Must be a Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice.


• Certification as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.


• Completion of an ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous materials (minimum 40 hours); or meet minimum state requirements. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care or Retail settings.
