Position Overview:
The Practical Nurse (LPN) at Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is tasked with providing comprehensive care to Veterans within primary and specialty healthcare settings.
Role Responsibilities:
The LPN delivers both direct and indirect nursing services to patients and their families within the clinic environment. This role operates as part of a collaborative team under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, ensuring compliance with established policies, protocols, and standards of care.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants who are in the process of completing educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered for selection; however, final hiring is contingent upon meeting all necessary qualifications.
Basic Qualifications:
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Language Proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English.
- Education: Must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program approved by the relevant State agency or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Military healthcare education may also be considered.
- Licensure: Must hold an active, unrestricted license as a Practical or Vocational Nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth.
Grade Determinations:
To qualify for specific grades, candidates must demonstrate the required level of competence:
- GS-03: No additional experience required beyond basic qualifications.
- GS-04: Requires six months of qualifying experience or relevant education.
- GS-05: Requires one year of experience at the GS-4 level, demonstrating the ability to provide a full range of nursing care.
- GS-06: Requires one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level, fully meeting performance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in outpatient specialty services, including Primary Care/PACT, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification are advantageous.
Key Duties:
The LPN will collaborate with the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) to deliver care to a designated panel of patients. Responsibilities include:
- Providing direct nursing care in an outpatient setting.
- Documenting care and patient responses accurately.
- Monitoring vital signs and recording relevant data.
- Educating patients on common health issues and treatment plans.
- Participating in performance improvement initiatives.
Work Schedule:
Available shifts may include Monday through Friday or extended hours, totaling a 40-hour work week.
