The Certified Retail Pharmacy Technician will play a vital role in the preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications and front-end items to patients of all age groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, transmit, and receive wholesaler orders as required.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding and ability to use current equipment, including robotics, electronic workflow systems, printers, computers, fax machines, telephones, and POS systems.
  • Communicate with third-party payers to obtain adjudications of prescription claims.
  • Interpret and perform necessary pharmaceutical calculations, entering prescriptions into the pharmacy information system for pharmacist review.
  • Complete all necessary documentation.
  • Answer telephones using appropriate verbiage, screen, and triage inquiries.
  • Assist patients at drop-off and pick-up, obtaining pertinent patient information for inclusion into electronic profiles.
  • Prepare and compound medications, such as solutions, creams, and ointments, under the supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Accurately prepare, label, and package medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Maintain daily contact with patients, nursing personnel, physicians, and other ancillary employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel among UPMC facilities when necessary and as directed to complete assigned pharmacy activities.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement as it relates to the department.
  • Promote the Mission, Vision, and Values of UPMC.
  • Maintain the pharmacy in a clean, orderly, and safe manner by restocking shelves, cleaning workstations, returning medications to stock, etc.
  • Assist in training new employees and pharmacy students with regard to work procedures.
  • Participate in special projects as required or assigned.
  • Assist Pharmacists and Medication Transition Coordinators with medication delivery and patient care.
  • Display teamwork by actively supporting department changes and willingly and proactively assisting co-workers.
  • Assure work for each shift is completed prior to departure.
  • Understand and comply with handling procedures of all controlled substances.
  • Inspect medications in assigned areas, removing expired products and completing documentation.
  • Assist in the creation, handling, and maintenance of a variety of pharmacy records to promote efficient operation of the pharmacy and assure regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in proper inventory maintenance of drugs and supplies ordered and stored by the pharmacy.

Requirements:

  • Previous pharmacy technician experience and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or a Bachelor's degree and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • Successfully complete all assigned annual competencies.
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained, including required continuing education credits.
  • Prior retail pharmacy experience is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License required for Retail Pharmacy Technicians at UPMC Hanover.
  • Act 34.
