Established in 1983, Dolores Street Community Services is a multifaceted nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, dedicated to addressing various social issues. We provide essential services to meet immediate needs while also engaging in advocacy and community organizing across a spectrum of issues, including housing, immigration, and employment.
Position Summary:
The Labor Rights Program is committed to uniting, empowering, and organizing immigrant workers to ensure dignified employment, fair compensation, and safe working conditions. Workers participate in two collectives, one for men (the Day Labor Program) and one for women (La Colectiva de Mujeres), aimed at building collective strength, enhancing skills, and securing dignified employment.
Founded in 1991, the Labor Rights Program aims to safeguard the rights of immigrant and mixed-status workers within the informal economy, particularly day laborers and domestic workers. The program integrates outreach, organization, leadership development, advocacy, and direct services to enhance workers' rights and bolster the political influence of day laborers and domestic workers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Labor Center, ensuring proper access control and management of internal offices and storage areas.
- Supervise, train, and support a dedicated team focused on placing immigrant workers in safe and fairly compensated positions.
- Facilitate relationships with employers, ensuring high-quality customer service.
- Maintain the efficient operation of Labor Center systems, including worker ranking lists, new member intake, data management, and community engagement.
- Lead the Labor Rights Program and liaise with employers to negotiate resolutions regarding unpaid wages.
- Engage in partnerships and coalitions related to job development and labor rights.
- Develop effective communication strategies with program members.
- Assess the needs and strengths of the member community.
- Collaborate with program staff to enhance and evaluate programming for immigrant day laborers and domestic workers.
- Support staff in training and empowering members to assume leadership roles in Practical Training Positions.
Additional Organizational Duties:
- Conduct business in alignment with the Dolores Street Community Services Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and prioritizing the agency's and community's best interests.
- Commit to treating every community member with respect and dignity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities on issues related to affordable housing, land use, and worker rights; familiarity with these issues in the San Francisco area is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and an understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-income residents.
- Proven experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders in a multiracial, multilingual, and multigenerational environment.
- Experience in crisis intervention and trauma-informed services.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with low-income immigrant families and individuals.
- Understanding of the strengths, needs, and daily experiences of Day Laborers and Domestic Workers.
- Strong customer service and brand management skills.
- Commitment to empowering low-wage immigrants to become successful worker-owners and community leaders.
- Excellent facilitation and communication abilities.
- Strong analytical, writing, and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn quickly and develop a variety of new skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English.
- Availability to work regularly from Monday to Saturday.
