About the Position
The Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is seeking a Physician - Pain Management (Mather AFB) Specialist to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment where you can make a real difference in the lives of our nation's veterans.
Job Summary
We are looking for a skilled physician to provide comprehensive pain and rehabilitation care to veterans through clinical evaluation and treatment within the outpatient Pain Program, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) clinics and inpatient care as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience in the evaluation and management of complex pain conditions, including advanced interventional pain management procedures and ideally neuromodulation, as well as related VHA Opioid Pain Management.
Key Responsibilities
* Provides comprehensive pain and rehabilitation care to veterans through clinical evaluation and treatment within the outpatient Pain Program, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) clinics and inpatient care as needed.
* Performs medication management, including opioids, spine and other pain procedures, ultrasounds, non-medication management of pain, including physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, etc., and conducts Pain and PM&R clinics as needed and comply by all PMOP requirements.
* Supports the Opioid Safety Initiative (OSI) and opioid stewardship efforts in compliance with the Government Accountability Office, Office of Inspector General and Office of National Drug Control Policy.
* Ensures clinical appropriateness of the treatment of patients served, including timely and appropriate transition to other levels of care, notation of contraindications and precautions of care.
* Supervises and educates/trains PM&R residents in clinical activities relevant to PM&R and Pain Management.
* Coordinates Pain and PM&R clinics for meeting patient care needs, implementing Stepped Care Model for Pain Management (SCM-PM) and educates primary care physicians and other providers about referrals to the Pain Program.
* Develops and expands Interdisciplinary Pain Rehabilitation programs and clinics for comprehensive pain care with Primary Care, Mental Health, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Nursing, and other disciplines as appropriate.
* Communicates with Pain Management and PM&R physicians, nursing, pharmacists, mental health care providers, primary care providers and other members of the interdisciplinary team and communicates/interacts daily with the team as needed.
* Collaborates with other services to ensure appropriate and timely pain-related consultation and coordination of care.
Requirements
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Qualifications
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
* Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
* Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
* Board certification in Physical, Medicine & Rehabilitation and Board certification in Pain Medicine preferred.
Physical Requirements
This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
