Job Title: Transportation Surveyor Party Chief

Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent supervises, plans, coordinates, and participates in the daily operations of a field survey crew while performing a wide variety of professional land surveying work in a field setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Directs and assists a field survey crew in daily assignments, planning the location and safety of crew work.
  • Oversees tailgate safety meetings every 10 working days or more often as needed.
  • Verifies project datums and project control.
  • Determines the most appropriate survey methods and procedures to use on a particular project in consultation with the Senior Transportation Surveyor.
  • Assigns tasks of survey crew members and exercises 'responsible charge' of crew's survey work as defined in the Land Surveyor's Act.
  • Ensures daily field survey operations are in compliance with legal requirements, policies, and specifications.
Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Must be able to drive any type of vehicle, requiring a Class 'C' license in heavy freeway and highway traffic.
  • An Audiogram and Medical may be required prior to being hired.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Surveyor Party Chief (Caltrans) Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
