About the Role
The City of Columbia is seeking a highly skilled Urban Development Specialist to join our team. As an Urban Development Specialist, you will be responsible for administering the enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance, interpreting and rendering decisions in applying various provisions to individual situations, and approving applications for certificates of occupancy relative to compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.

In this role, you will meet with homeowners, businesses, developers, contractors, engineers, to discuss City requirements; review residential, commercial and industrial site developments and subdivisions for compliance with the planning code, comprehensive plan, zoning, and other regulations; approve zoning permits as allowed by ordinance of the City and issue certificates of occupancy in conjunction with the Chief Building Official;

You will also provide technical assistance to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Historic Zoning Commission, and Architectural Review Board on all pertinent matters and prepare necessary reports as required by the Board; initiate amendments to the zoning ordinance as necessary; investigate and initiate necessary corrective measures as required with regards to zoning violation complaints;

This role requires strong computer and computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel. You must possess knowledge of City and State laws, ordinances, and regulations governing city planning and zoning, public nuisances, property maintenance; knowledge of the principles and practices of planning; applicable construction codes and related laws and ordinances as adopted by the City;
