Overview

If you have a passion for literature and a desire to assist others, consider the role of Library Page at The New York Public Library. This position is designed to provide insight into the workings of a library system while allowing you to contribute to the community's access to information and resources. We seek individuals who are dependable, possess a strong work ethic, and exhibit excellent communication skills. As a representative of the library, a positive and friendly attitude is essential.

The Library Page role entails a commitment of 12 hours per week, with a schedule that includes evenings and weekends, tailored to the library's operational needs.

As a Library Page, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Library Page Fellowship Program, which focuses on career development for youth. This program offers resources to enhance career readiness, explore professional aspirations, and receive mentorship and training.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a Page supervisor, the Library Page will:
  • Provide outstanding customer service by maintaining a positive and courteous demeanor.
  • Organize and shelve books, CDs, DVDs, and other library materials in an orderly fashion.
  • Assist patrons with inquiries, helping them locate materials and directing them to the appropriate resources.
  • Support patrons with basic technology usage, including computers and audio/visual equipment.
  • Prepare library materials requested by patrons.
  • Help staff in checking materials for damage and removing them from circulation.
  • Assist in setting up public spaces for events and programs.
  • Perform additional related tasks as required.
Qualifications

Required Education and Certifications
  • Currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited institution.
  • Possession of a proper employment certificate for minors under 18, as mandated by state law.
Required Skills
  • Ability to accurately sort and arrange items in alphanumeric order.
  • Strong organizational skills and the capability to follow detailed instructions in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to engage with a diverse group of patrons.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Reliability and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Basic proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience troubleshooting basic computer and printer issues.
  • Familiarity with eReaders and library technologies.
  • Ability to communicate in foreign languages.
