Wildlife Management Assistant

Join the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks team as a Wildlife Management Apprentice and gain hands-on experience in animal care and conservation.
About the RoleThis apprenticeship program is designed for students and recent graduates in zoology, biology, wildlife management, or related fields. As a Wildlife Management Apprentice, you will assist our animal management team with daily care and management of wild animals, including cleaning and feeding, animal observations, record keeping, and facilities maintenance.
Responsibilities- Assist with daily animal care and management tasks
- Participate in animal observations and record keeping
- Help with facilities maintenance and cleaning
- Assist with research projects and conservation breeding programs
As a Wildlife Management Apprentice, you will receive training in techniques and guidelines for working safely around wild animals, including:
- Selection, preparation, and presentation of proper foodstuffs
- Cleaning and disinfection of animal enclosures
- Recognizing significant changes in animal behavior or condition
- Moving animals, including shifting, crating, or other transport
- Capture and restraint
- Animal identification methods, including ear tagging or transponder placement
- Assisting with veterinary medical procedures
- Implementation of conservation breeding programs
- Research techniques and methodology
- Second-year college student or recent graduate in zoology, biology, wildlife management, or related field
- Knowledge of exotic animals and their medicine
- Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing
- Responsible, flexible, self-motivated, and able to work independently and in a team
- Ability to work five days a week, 8am-5pm
- Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures, including safety protocols
- Able to lift and move up to 10lbs constantly, 30lbs frequently, and 50lbs occasionally
- Possession of a valid current state-issued motor vehicle operator's license and a good driving record
- Able to balance multiple assignments successfully
- Able to work in varied weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
- Able to work in extreme heat environments (exceeding 110°F) for extended periods of time
- Able to work in extreme cold environments (to below -40°F) for limited periods with proper protective equipment
- Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement
- Ability to adhere to the Wilds drug-free workplace policy
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check
- Ability to provide own transportation, on-site housing is available
