The Anesthesia Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting the Anesthesia provider under the guidance of the Chief of Anesthesiology or their designated representative. Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and assemble essential anesthesia setups and equipment. Conduct daily checks on anesthesia machines and perform leak tests between procedures, ensuring proper room setup. Safely dispose of disposables post-procedure. Troubleshoot anesthesia machines and physiological monitors, actively engaging in problem identification and resolution. Collaborate with the anesthesia provider to formulate a tailored plan of care based on clinical assessments.
- Assist the anesthesia provider with direct patient care, including challenging venipuncture in various age groups, induction processes, fiberoptic intubation, and providing cricoid pressure as necessary. Position patients for anesthesia blocks, respond to emergency situations such as Code Blue and Code Pink alongside the Anesthesia care team, and manage work assignments to ensure the completion of patient care tasks.
- Set up invasive monitoring equipment in both routine and emergency scenarios, including Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central venous pressure lines, PA catheters, and cardiac output monitoring. Perform patient care activities within the designated scope, considering the specific needs of patients across different age groups. Assist in obtaining lab specimens and arterial blood gases, ensuring timely delivery and awaiting results as required.
- Coordinate patient monitoring and equipment availability with the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Critical Care units, collaborating with the perioperative team to facilitate efficient operating room turnover. Assemble anesthesia equipment and supplies for general and regional anesthesia procedures, preparing trays as requested.
- Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and decontamination of all non-disposable anesthesia-related items, conducting terminal cleaning of equipment as scheduled. Maintain adequate stock levels of supplies and non-scheduled medications in the anesthesia workroom, machines, and carts, regularly reviewing for expired medications and coordinating with Pharmacy for out-of-stock items.
- Utilize a comprehensive understanding of all equipment and monitoring systems, performing routine checks and maintenance as necessary. Inspect instruments for damage and arrange for repairs or troubleshooting as needed, working closely with Biomedical Engineering for the upkeep of anesthesia monitoring equipment.
- Document equipment maintenance and repairs within the department, maintaining an inventory of both disposable and non-disposable equipment, and ensuring emergency carts and boxes are fully stocked. Foster a clean, organized, and functional work environment while participating in evaluations and recommendations for new equipment.
- Demonstrate a professional and supportive attitude, actively engaging in departmental professional development and contributing to the assessment of current and future educational needs. Uphold safety precautions to maintain a secure environment for all individuals.
- Adhere to compliance standards, the Principles of Responsibility, and Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct, ensuring the confidentiality of patient information and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
