Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Detention Officer Trainee or Detention Officer. As a member of our law enforcement team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates and staff within our detention facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take custody of inmates from arresting officers and book them into the facility
  • Process and verify identification of inmates, including checking for outstanding warrants
  • Escort inmates to and from court and process necessary paperwork
  • Coordinate and communicate with other law enforcement agencies regarding inmate transfer and movement
  • Perform field drug testing on inmates and process evidence discovered on them
  • Apply electronic monitoring devices to inmates per court orders and bond them out according to established guidelines
  • Provide meals and dispense medicine to inmates, as well as maintain the facility
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum one year of public contact experience required
  • Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License required
  • Successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph required
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends
Preferred Qualifications
  • Employment experience as a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections officer, or military experience
Working Conditions

This is a civilian, trainee class that works in a 24/7 detention facility. Employees are subject to verbal and physical abuse from inmates and are required to physically search inmates and use sufficient legal force to restrain violent/combative/mentally ill inmates.

The City of Mesa offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a hiring bonus of $2,000.00 for this position.
