Senior Microbiologist II

We are seeking a highly skilled Microbiologist II to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing complex microbiological work, including the isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and quality control and preventive maintenance.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Under the technical guidance of the Clinical Bacteriology Team Lead, perform complex procedures for the isolation and identification of bacteria using MALDI-TOF or biochemical tests, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and antibiotic resistant mechanism testing. Accurately record all test results and recognize problems or deviations, referring to the supervisor or team lead as needed.
2. Perform quality control and preventive maintenance, including preparing and evaluating the quality of reagents used in tests, tracking expiration dates, and documenting quality control results. Initiate quality assurance corrective action and document technical performance issues.
3. Evaluate test results for accuracy and completeness, entering test results into the laboratory information system for reporting. Identify abnormal results and refer to the Team Lead. File completed reports according to standard protocol and release uncomplicated results based on SOPs.
4. Ensure an adequate supply of reagents and miscellaneous supplies, reviewing expiration dates and placing requests for reagents when the supply is below the desired level. Review supplies for completeness of information and coordinate semi-annual SAO inventory.
5. Perform preventative maintenance, including advanced troubleshooting on instruments, recognizing problems and deviations, and referring to the supervisor with recommendations for problem solving. Assist the Team Lead with revisions of preventive maintenance records, equipment standard operating procedures, and corrective action documentation.
6. Participate in cross-training programs by teaching or demonstrating laboratory techniques in accordance with standard operating procedures. Document all training and deliver to the Manager within 10 days of completion. Participate in training programs by reading procedures, listening, taking notes, and asking questions. Take responsibility for ensuring that the knowledge and skills demonstrated are clearly understood and competency can be demonstrated.
7. Assist with verification or validation studies of new products or tests, assist in the development and revision of procedural manuals, and assist with special projects or surge capacity testing. Under the technical guidance of the Team Lead, provide data for project updates and compile data in spreadsheet or word processing format for presentations.
8. Assist other staff in their duties and provide additional support with special projects to maintain the group's high quality and productivity. Participate in weekend and holiday rotations, attend meetings, interact and communicate with customers when applicable, and attend and/or participate in work-related workshops, seminars, and other training activities. Answer routine customer inquiries according to SOPs and some non-routine inquiries as directed by the supervisor. Interact with other programs as requested. Other duties as assigned include actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or continuity of operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Based on your work area, consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge and working experience of bacteriology, including the use of MALDI-TOF and biochemical tests to identify bacteria. Ability to perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing, perform Carbapenemase production or other enzyme testing, and perform antibiotic resistant mechanism testing. Ability to use a computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database analysis, and results reporting. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, follow written and verbal instructions, teach laboratory procedures, and use of various items of laboratory equipment. Ability to effectively communicate technical instructions, work independently, and make technical decisions based on professional knowledge and experience. Cannot be color blind.
