A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A HEAD LIFEGUARD


JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for enforcing safety regulations to ensure the well-being of patrons. Monitors activities and provides services at the pool area to prevent accidents and assist swimmers and customers. Delivers exceptional customer service with a positive attitude. Manages the daily operations of the Pearland Natatorium or City Swimming Pool (as assigned) in the absence of the Assistant Pool Manager, Manager, or Aquatics Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises lifeguards and water safety instructors at the Pearland Natatorium in the absence of the Aquatics Manager and, if assigned to the City Pool, oversees lifeguards and cashiers in the absence of the Assistant Manager and Manager.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work, as scheduled.
  • Provides outstanding customer service to all facility users, including members, class participants, facility renters, and school district and club athletes and coaches.
  • Oversees the work of lifeguards, part-time lifeguards, and water safety instructors at the Pearland Natatorium in the absence of the Aquatics Manager.
  • Advises swimmers on safe pool usage.
  • Actively monitors for swimmers in distress.
  • Assists and/or rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Maintains order in swimming areas by enforcing the rules and regulations of the City of Pearland Aquatics Division.
  • Performs daily maintenance tasks, including cleaning the deck, restrooms, and facility.
  • Tests chlorine levels and pH value of water using a water testing kit and logs the information appropriately.
  • Inserts and removes lane lines as necessary.
  • Works days, evenings, and weekends as required.
  • Reports any unsafe equipment, facility, or chemical issues to management immediately.
  • Participates in and/or leads required in-service training sessions and meetings.
  • Contributes to team efforts by performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED is required.

A minimum of one (1) full swim season experience is required (two seasons preferred). Other non-aquatic management experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding is required.

Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor is required.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification or equivalent is required prior to the start of work.

Pre-Interview Swimming Test Requirements:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously using only the front crawl or breaststroke.

2. Swim 20-25 yards, submerge to 13 feet, retrieve a 10 lbs. weight, and return to the starting point while holding the weight with both hands within a time limit of 100 seconds.

3. Tread water for two (2) minutes without using hands.
