Position Overview


The Head of Respiratory Therapy and Cardiopulmonary Operations is a pivotal leadership position responsible for the management and delivery of respiratory care, sleep services, EKG, EEG, and blood gas laboratory operations.

This role merges clinical proficiency with operational oversight, ensuring exceptional patient care while optimizing the efficiency of the cardiopulmonary and sleep lab services.


Key Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises cardiopulmonary personnel and departmental functions.
  • Oversees the operations of the sleep center and its staff.
  • Manages day-to-day operations and patient throughput.
  • Develops and maintains departmental policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Coordinates staffing, resources, and equipment, ensuring compliance with patient care guidelines.
  • Manages the daily operations of the blood gas laboratory, including equipment and supply management.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of cardiopulmonary and sleep lab personnel.
  • Ensures ongoing competency validation and educational development for staff members.
  • Identifies and addresses educational needs to enhance processes and patient care.
  • Plans and conducts in-service training sessions.
  • Mentors staff and fosters professional growth by identifying educational opportunities.
  • Develops and reviews patient education materials.
  • Monitors and follows up on incident reports.
  • Oversees product evaluations and manages supply and equipment costs effectively.
  • Ensures adherence to standards of care and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
  • Collaborates with senior management in budget development and implementation.
  • Maintains necessary clinical skills relevant to the department.
  • Provides support to staff in problem-solving and decision-making processes involving patients and families.
  • Facilitates staff meetings and discussions.
  • Engages in research to promote evidence-based practices.
  • Conducts rounds to assess safety, infection control, and patient satisfaction.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensures timely ordering of departmental supplies.
  • Participates in organizational committees as needed.
  • Conducts training sessions for various competencies.
Responsibilities may evolve or new tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Supervisory Duties

  • Proficient in the timekeeping system.
  • Responsible for full supervisory functions, including daily direction, approving absences or overtime, and making recommendations for hiring and terminations.
  • Decisions are made in accordance with hospital policies and in collaboration with senior management.
  • Accountable for the management of capital assets under senior management guidance.
  • Involved in long-term operational planning with senior management.

Required Skills

  • This role involves diverse and complex work situations.
  • The Head of Respiratory Therapy is expected to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess comprehensive knowledge of respiratory care practices and familiarity with all equipment used in the cardiopulmonary department.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or a related healthcare field.
  • Valid Arizona State Respiratory Care practitioner (RCP) license.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in respiratory care.
  • At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • CPR/BLS certification (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • ACLS certification.
  • PALS certification.
  • NRP certification.
