Job Description Summary

West Virginia Northern Community College is seeking candidates for the position of Student Achievement Advisor.

In this role, you will provide essential support, coaching, and guidance to students and prospective enrollees within the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. Your primary focus will be to facilitate the admissions process, onboarding, and enrollment, ensuring that students have the resources they need to thrive.

The Student Achievement Advisor is a key professional role dedicated to enhancing student retention, success, and program completion. Responsibilities may also include outreach initiatives to various community venues, such as high schools or college fairs, to inform and inspire potential students to consider our institution. Additional duties may involve contributing to recruitment strategies and providing insights for admissions marketing campaigns.

This position requires strong interpersonal skills to foster effective relationships with faculty, staff, administration, students, and community members. You will work under general supervision, guided by established policies and objectives. The challenges faced in this role are diverse and complex, often necessitating innovative and creative problem-solving approaches.

The Student Achievement Advisor will exercise discretion in prioritizing, planning, and organizing tasks while adhering to time and outcome requirements. There is some flexibility to adjust workflows based on situational needs. Your decisions will significantly impact the overall strategy and direction of the division and the institution, with potential consequences for errors that could lead to substantial costs or disruptions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students and prospective students in gathering necessary information to make informed decisions about enrollment and success at the institution.
  • Advise students and families on the admissions and financial aid processes, including support with FAFSA applications.
  • Collaborate closely with DHHR personnel, maintaining regular communication with DHHR offices and assisting participants in coordination with case workers.
  • Engage with TANF recipients both on and off campus to identify and mitigate barriers to academic success and completion.
  • Work with academic advisors to determine appropriate courses and schedules.
  • Provide students with information about available support programs and career services to guide them in selecting suitable programs of study. Monitor academic progress and financial aid compliance.
  • Coordinate with the Special Populations counselor and manage necessary paperwork with students and DHHR as required.
  • Travel among college campuses as necessary to meet with TANF program participants, DHHR representatives, and college personnel.
  • Design and deliver classes focused on transitional studies, college preparation, and success strategies based on the academic needs of TANF participants.
  • Organize and conduct workshops on topics such as stress management, time management, and study skills to promote overall student success.
  • Maintain participant records and prepare necessary reports.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned while adhering to all institutional policies and standards.
Qualifications and Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years in customer service; 1 year of experience in a community college setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in written and verbal communication in English.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated customer service excellence.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Technical proficiency, including high-level skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with computer information systems, preferably SCT Banner.
  • Understanding of federal educational regulations and institutional policies.
