Position Summary
This role involves operating communication devices to receive and relay public safety requests, ensuring timely dispatch of the appropriate emergency services. The position also includes various clerical and documentation responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Receiving urgent requests for assistance via the E-911 system, telephone, or radio for various emergency services.
2. Accurately determining the location of emergencies and dispatching the necessary personnel.
3. Maintaining detailed records of calls, complaints, and communication logs.
4. Providing routine assistance and information to the public as appropriate.
5. Assessing the urgency of calls and coordinating the response of emergency responders.
6. Collaborating with multiple agencies to ensure effective resource allocation.
Additional Responsibilities
Employees in this role may be required to perform other related duties as directed by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications and Skills
Applicants should possess:
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations regarding radio communication.
- Familiarity with the operation of communication systems and local geography.
- Proficiency in assessing emergency situations.
- Strong verbal communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and handle stressful interactions.
- Capability to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergencies.
- Skills in building effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Competence in managing multiple tasks efficiently during training.
- Ability to assist distressed callers and gather essential information effectively.
- Proficiency in using computer systems and handling confidential information.
- Skills in identifying language barriers and utilizing translation resources when necessary.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment as part of a team.
- Familiarity with Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols and providing critical instructions over the phone.
- Map reading skills for processing wireless 911 calls.
Work Environment
This position is typically performed in an office setting characterized by a high-stress atmosphere, requiring 12-hour shifts. Successful completion of a designated working test period is mandatory.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred one year of relevant experience.
- GCIC certification; EMD certification, or the ability to obtain it during the initial training phase.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
