Job Summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University is seeking a highly skilled General Construction and Repair Mechanic to join their team. This individual will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance, construction, and renovation operations in and around the laboratory buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, construction, and renovation operations in and around laboratory buildings
  • Conduct carpentry work, including construction of partitions, room divisions, and enclosures
  • Operate various woodworking, sheet metal, and welding equipment
  • Perform masonry work, including alterations, improvements, and equipment installation
  • Mix concrete for machine bed construction and building operations
  • Set, level, and align machines and equipment
  • Repair, relay, or install new floors, including concrete, wood blocks, and tile
  • Repair and improve roof surfacing and rain gutters
  • Repair and install locks on doors, cabinets, and security files
  • Coordinate installations of security monitoring devices with vendors
  • Maintain keying systems for all laboratory facilities
  • Interpret work orders, drawings, and blueprints
  • Direct the work of student helpers or laborers, as assigned by supervisor
  • Drive department vehicle as required
Requirements

This position requires the use of advanced shop mathematics and the ability to interpret complicated drawings and specifications. The ideal candidate will have equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or a high school diploma plus a 2-year technical college education. Over 3 years of effective experience is also required. U.S. citizenship is mandatory.

Work Schedule

The work schedule for this position is 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

This position requires the operation of a motor vehicle as part of the job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
