Job Title: Controller

The Controller serves as a key member of the finance team, overseeing the day-to-day financial activities of the organization. This position is responsible for managing and supervising the finance staff, including the Staff Accountant and Accounting Manager, who in turn oversee the general accounting staff responsible for troop banking functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Finance team and Troop/SU Banking.
  • Manage and oversee daily accounting activities to meet deadlines and guidelines, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and FASB Accounting Standards for all processing.
  • Supervise and coordinate the monthly financial closing process to ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close.
  • Prepare and/or review periodic internal financial statements, including variance analysis, for management and board review.
  • Assist with managing the council's banking, endowment, and investment management financial relationships.
  • Oversee all aspects of contribution and grant accounting and work closely with the Fund Development team to appropriately allocate and restrict/release grant and other funding.
  • Work closely with the CFO to develop, administer, and monitor performance of operating plans and budgets, by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Assist the CFO with all council financial operations to ensure they are carried out in compliance with GAAP, local, state, federal, and not-for-profit regulations, guidelines, and laws.
  • Oversee year-end financial statement audits and employee benefit plan audits.
  • Assist with payroll functions.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or similar, required; plus 8 or more years of progressive experience in Accounting and Finance roles.
  • Experience in fund accounting or nonprofit accounting preferred.
  • Ability to learn new software; experience with Sage Intacct and Paylocity, preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability to oversee a professional team.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to leverage critical thinking skills, especially around data, to make impactful business decisions.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license; access to reliable transportation required.
  • Pass and maintain required background clearances.
  • Work with individuals of diverse background and ages in a professional manner.
  • Work a flexible schedule, to include nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Travel throughout the council, as needed.
  • Lift/carry 25 lbs.
  • Sitting, standing, or walking for a moderate period of time is required.
