About the Job:

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the City of Salt Lake City's Public Services Facilities Division as a Lead HVAC Technician. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing general supervision and mentorship to assigned crew members, ensuring the efficient operation of our facilities' mechanical systems. Your expertise in air conditioning and heating systems, including calibration, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of pneumatic and electronic controls, will be invaluable in maintaining our buildings' comfort and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and mentor assigned crew members, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project completion.
  • Install, monitor, repair, and service chillers, boilers, and air-conditioners, ranging from 3 to 300 tons cooling capacity.
  • Install, service, and repair environmental control systems in all facility or plant buildings, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout.
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platforms or floors, using hand tools and following blueprints or engineering specifications.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install duct work using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
  • Install expansion and discharge valves in circuits, connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating/ventilation fans to control panels, and connect control panels to power sources.
  • Test systems and add refrigerant to build up prescribed operating pressure, test joints and connections for gas leaks, and keep a log of all refrigerant use and reclamation.
  • Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities outlined in the HVAC Technician II Position Description and provide leadership, training, and support for team members in the HVAC working group.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in the HVAC area, or 8 years of increasingly responsible HVAC experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of codes, standards, practices, materials, and methods used in HVAC maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, circuit diagrams, and various styles of equipment operation manuals.
  • Possession of EPA Type II Certification.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain EPA Universal Type Certification within six months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid state driver's license or Utah driving privilege card.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and hazards and application of accident prevention measures associated with the operation of maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, which may include days, afternoons, graveyards, weekends, and holidays.
  • Subject to call-out and ability to work standby, as scheduled.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Aviation environment or industrial, commercial facility experience preferred.
  • Computer building controls background preferred.
Working Conditions:
  • Moderately heavy physical activity. Required push, pull, or lift heavy weights up to 70 pounds from 10%-15% of the work time.
  • Difficult working positions; may have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods and squat or crawl into small spaces under and near operation equipment to check and complete minor repairs.
  • May perform work in ceilings, on tops of ladders, bucket lifts, scissor lifts, and roof in heights exceeding 100 feet.
  • High exposure to disagreeable elements such as dust, fumes, noise, dampness, cold, heat, chemicals, or grease.
  • Exposed to outside weather conditions year-round and moderate hazards much of the time.
