Job Summary

The Surgical Nurse Specialist provides high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages in the immediate post-operative period at Oroville Hospital.

Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
  • Conducts initial and ongoing assessments to gather data relevant to the patient's individual needs and age group.
  • Recoveries surgical patients receiving anesthesia following established routines and protocols.
  • Assesses and provides for patient needs of daily living, privacy, and a safe environment.
  • Assesses symptoms and changes in patient's condition and responds appropriately.
  • Initiates nursing orders and notifies physicians as indicated.
  • Administers medications and completes treatments accurately and on time.
  • Responds in a therapeutic manner to patient behavior.
  • Practices Medical-Surgical Asepsis and adheres to department and unit standards of care.
  • Responds to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Keeps abreast of new changes occurring in the Surgery Department and stays up-to-date with new techniques and procedures.
  • Understands and performs standardization of set-ups and uses supplies economically.
  • Knowledge of fire and disaster procedures, cardiac arrest procedures, and location of fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and fire hoses.
  • Takes PACU call as assigned and performs other duties as required.
Communication and Professional Responsibilities
  • Documents recovery progression on Post Anesthesia records and communicates pertinent information to other members of the healthcare team.
  • Transmits concise reports that include pertinent events of the Operating Room and Post Anesthesia unit.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and self.
  • Practices problem-solving approach (Identify, Gather Facts, and Implement Plan).
  • Completes physician orders accurately and seeks clarification when indicated.
  • Accepts constructive criticism to upgrade professional abilities.
  • Offers assistance and/or instruction to coworkers.
  • Participates in professional development activities and unit meetings.
  • Maintains a professional and courteous manner in interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships.
  • Demonstrates professional work habits in attendance and organization.
