Key Responsibilities
  • Apply coating materials using accepted trade devices, including those designed to give special effects, such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices.
  • Apply coating techniques to ensure surfaces have a smooth, textured, and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
  • Prepare exterior work on buildings, including washing, removal of paint or varnish by sanding, scraping, wire brushing, burning with a blowtorch, or using paint/varnish remover.
  • Paint and decorate interior and exterior buildings, military housing quarters, transportation equipment, machinery, office equipment, swimming pools, road markings, and occasionally cut and set glass.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is:

  • Ability to perform the Painter position without more than normal supervision performing duties such as:
    • Interpreting instructions or specifications to assist journeymen in applying coating materials to surfaces by carrying out routine tasks of the trade.
    • Stirring, thinning, and mixing coating materials following specific instructions.
    • Determining which standard methods and techniques are needed to apply coating materials to surfaces.
    • Cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment such as paintbrushes, rollers, and spray guns.

This position requires shift work and may be subject to emergency call-back duty.
