Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems for our launch vehicles.

Your primary focus will be on the design, analysis, and testing of mechanical components and systems, including valves, regulators, accumulators, actuators, manifolds, mechanisms, pumps, and other mechanical devices.

You will work closely with our cross-functional team to ensure that all mechanical systems meet the required specifications and performance standards.

In addition to your technical expertise, you will also be responsible for leading and mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a culture of safety and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical systems for launch vehicles
  • Conduct analysis and testing of mechanical components and systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure mechanical systems meet specifications and performance standards
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers
  • Contribute to a culture of safety and inclusion

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and development
  • Experience with 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Proficiency in crafting engineering drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Solid understanding of fluid components and mechanical devices
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience in aerospace industry
  • Experience designing systems with Hydrogen, Oxygen, Methane, and hydraulic fluids in liquid and/or gaseous states
  • Experience in system layout or component design for launch vehicle or ground cryogenic and pressure systems
  • Experience designing seal and bearing packages for valves and actuators
  • Experience with thermo-fluid solver applications Thermal Desktop (Sinda Fluint), AFT (Fathom/Arrow), Excel based models, REFPROP
  • Proven understanding of materials properties and treatments; preference for aerospace materials
  • Hands-on experience building and testing mechanical assemblies or pressurized components/systems
  • Experience in engineering analysis/support for disposition of Non-Conformance (NC) related to fluid components, machined parts, weldments, and electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Experience with cryogenic transport elements (tube/pipe), bellows, flex hoses and Mechanical Flexible Assemblies (MFA)
