Job Summary

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing recreational activities for assigned programs or campuses. This position involves supervising recreation center facilities and ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver recreation programs and team building initiatives that promote healthy leisure lifestyle choices, psychomotor skills, and socialization development.
  • Create a varied youth recreational activities schedule, considering treatment plans and individual needs.
  • Assist youth in positive play experiences through role modeling, skill development, and provision of recreation opportunities.
  • Document case progress notes and participate in treatment team meetings.
  • Supervise recreation center facilities, including maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Participate in special event planning and provide feedback on Service Plan Review.
  • Supervise recreational activities for up to three youth, as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Physical Education, or related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of youth recreation experience in a human services environment.
  • CPR certification required or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Certification may be required.
  • Unrestricted, valid NYS driver's license for minimum of 1 year with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of recreation programs, activities, and team building initiatives.
  • Demonstrate capability for engaging youth in trust-based, productive relationships.
  • Ability to use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize and address aggressive behavior through approved interventions and de-escalation techniques.
Work Environment

The Recreation Therapist must be able to work a variable schedule, including evenings and weekends. The physical demands of the job include occasional sitting, standing, walking, driving, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
