General Overview of the Role

Responsible for operating sonographic equipment and conducting diagnostic examinations using ultrasound technology.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct clinical assessments and perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations, which may include:

  • Abdominal and vascular imaging
  • Small parts ultrasound
  • Obstetric and gynecological imaging
  • Pediatric head, hip, and spine assessments
  • Interventional ultrasound procedures

Adhere to established departmental protocols.

Utilize advanced cognitive skills to identify, document, and modify procedures based on anatomical and pathological information.

Exercise independent judgment during examinations to accurately distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.

Analyze ultrasound images, integrate sonographic data with medical history, and communicate results to the Radiologist.

Ensure the safety and comfort of patients throughout their ultrasound experience.

Engage effectively with patients and the healthcare team, acknowledging the unique requirements of ultrasound examinations.

Assist in the daily operations of the ultrasound department, including:

  • Accurate exam tracking and billing
  • Maintenance of ultrasound equipment and workspace
  • Management of supply inventory

Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, referring providers, and commercial partners.

Participate in the training of ultrasound students during their clinical rotations.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound procedures without requiring assistance from peers.

Provide guidance and mentorship to existing staff and training to new sonographers.

Contribute to the education of new physicians, residents, and fellows in ultrasound technology.

Collaborate with other team members to ensure optimal patient care.

Report any equipment malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor.

Engage in maintaining laboratory accreditation standards.

Perform other related duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications

Education: Completion of a program that meets eligibility criteria for registry/certification or currently holds the necessary registry or certification.

Experience: No additional experience required beyond educational and certification prerequisites.

Level I - Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.

Level II - Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer.

Level III - Minimum of four years' experience in the specialty modality for promotion consideration.

Certifications:

ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.

BLS certification.
