Pupil Services Primary Purpose:

To collaborate under the guidance of a certified educator to assist in delivering instructional programs and services to students with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive within their Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Services may be rendered in a special education classroom, general education classroom, or other instructional environments.

Qualifications:
A Special Education Support Assistant must meet the Highly Qualified criteria as mandated by Federal and State regulations.

To achieve Highly Qualified status, this individual must have successfully completed 48 College Level Credits or pass a Highly Qualified Local Assessment.


Essential Functions:
Reinforces the behavior plan of assigned students as directed by the educator. Implements reinforcement services and activities related to cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor skills as assigned by the educator. Aids the educator with students requiring physical management of behavior using safe, legal, and accepted practices.

Prepares materials required by the educator for daily instruction or student assignments (spelling, math, language arts, etc.); makes necessary adaptations based on individual student needs; modifies materials by color coding/enlarging as required; and adjusts the number of problems as specified in the student's IEP and directed by the educator.

Assists assigned students with physical tasks, moving between rooms and to other designated areas. Performs simple errands and supportive tasks for assigned students such as sharpening pencils or carrying lunch trays. Accompanies assigned students when visits to the office or school nurse are necessary. Aids in supervising assigned students during play, recess, and recreational activities. Accompanies assigned students and assists the educator during emergency drills.

Supervises assigned students during morning and afternoon bus duty, morning and afternoon hall duty, morning cafeteria duty, or assists with students being dropped off by parents as directed by the Building Principal.

Maintains awareness of the whereabouts of assigned students at all times during responsibilities.

Serves as a resource person, if requested, to the student personnel evaluation team regarding one of the students to whom assigned.

Monitors class performance or group work and prompts or redirects as necessary in accordance with educator direction. Adheres to applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, guidelines, District policies, and administrative regulations. Familiarizes self with assigned student(s) IEP, including necessary accommodations in areas of responsibility. Accompanies the educator and assigned students on field trips or for community-based instruction during the school day. Assists with organizational needs as directed. Collects data and maintains daily communication information as directed for review by the educator before being sent to parent(s). Attends training as required for job performance. Completes and provides evidence of 20 hours per school year of staff development activities related to their assignment.

Assists assigned student(s) with physical tasks such as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving between rooms, and to other designated areas.

Facilitates personal care services as needed to assist students with daily living activities essential for comfort and well-being as outlined in the IEP or directed by the educator(s).

Performs additional duties as assigned. Adheres to school policy, administrative regulations, and state and federal laws.

Composure under stress, ability to work as a team member and independently, flexibility, multitasking, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Specific Skills:

Advanced Computer Skills, operate office equipment, planning/organization skills. Other Skills and Abilities: Follow written and verbal directions, work with minimal supervision, exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks, communicate effectively at all organizational levels, and perform duties according to District policies and state and federal regulations. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the applicable policies of the Ringgold School District.
