Position Overview:

The Assistant Land Surveyor is tasked with supporting the County Surveyor in executing duties as mandated by relevant state regulations. This role involves advanced technical survey work, including conducting land and road surveys and re-establishing property boundaries. The individual will serve as the primary aide to the County Surveyor.

Key Responsibilities:

· Develop survey maps, draft plans, and other related documents. Review and verify property descriptions.

· Utilize survey instruments and provide guidance on their correct operation.

· Collaborate with various agencies and the public to resolve issues regarding property lines and descriptions.

· Identify and document property corners and rights of way for infrastructure projects.

· Assess surveys completed by licensed professionals for adherence to state regulations.

· Conduct survey research to support organizational needs and prepare legal descriptions for projects.

· Prepare agenda items for relevant meetings.

· Assign, coordinate, oversee, and execute field survey tasks.

· Train field survey staff to enhance efficiency and accuracy in their work.

· Ensure that survey-related projects are conducted accurately and within established timelines.

· Maintain the work standards of the Surveyor's office staff to meet project requirements and comply with applicable laws.

· Employ computer software for drafting survey projects, managing data, and maintaining project files.

· Input data and assist in the upkeep of databases, including filing and recording surveys.

· Assume responsibilities delegated by the County Surveyor during their absence.

· Officially endorse survey maps, plats, and legal descriptions on behalf of the County as directed by the County Surveyor.

Supervisory Duties:

This position typically includes some supervisory responsibilities, such as providing daily work direction and input on hiring and employee management decisions. This is the initial level of supervision within the County, often involving hands-on work similar to that of subordinates.

Interpersonal Skills:

This role has a moderate impact on organizational functions and outcomes. Responsible for the prudent use of resources, including equipment and labor, and may involve oversight of others' use of organizational assets. Customer service is a critical component, affecting user satisfaction.

Work Environment:

This position may involve moderate hazards or obstacles. There may be some personal risk from job interactions or environmental conditions. The role may require outdoor work in varying weather conditions and exposure to potential hazards.

Physical Demands:

This role regularly requires moderate physical effort, including lifting light to moderately heavy objects and frequent movement. A valid driver's license is essential for this position.

Qualifications:

Positions at this level typically require skills and knowledge equivalent to a senior technician or para-professional. A two-year technical or vocational education beyond high school is preferred, along with two to four years of relevant experience. Candidates must possess the ability to identify and address variations from established norms.

Education and Certification:

Preferred candidates will have a four-year degree in land surveying or civil engineering. A minimum of 2-4 years of professional land surveying experience is required, specifically in interpreting complex deeds and restoring public land corners. Candidates must be registered as a professional land surveyor in the State of Oregon.
