Position Overview:

The Assistant Land Surveyor will support the County Surveyor in executing duties as defined in ORS 209 and the survey regulations of ORS 92 & ORS 100. This role encompasses supervisory and advanced technical survey tasks, including conducting land and road surveys and re-establishing section or designated land claim corners. The individual will act as the primary aide to the County Surveyor.

Key Responsibilities (in a typical work week):

· Develop survey maps, draft plans, and other visual representations. Verify and prepare property descriptions.

· Utilize survey instruments and guide others in their effective use.

· Collaborate with various agencies and the public to resolve issues related to property line descriptions and locations.

· Identify and reference property corners and rights of way for Public Works.

· Evaluate surveys completed by licensed land surveyors for adherence to ORS.

· Conduct survey research to support business needs, public inquiries, and other governmental entities, while preparing legal descriptions for County Projects.

· Prepare agenda items for Board of County Commissioners meetings.

· Assign, coordinate, supervise, and execute survey fieldwork.

· Provide training for field survey personnel to enhance efficiency and accuracy in their tasks.

· Ensure that survey work or related projects are conducted accurately and within set timelines.

· Train and uphold the work standards of Surveyor's office staff to comply with established project requirements and applicable Oregon Survey Laws.

· Employ computer software for CAD tasks, including drafting survey projects, inputting data for various public works initiatives, and maintaining project status files.

· Input data and assist in managing databases, including filing and recording surveys.

· Assume responsibilities delegated by the County Surveyor during their absence.

· Officially endorse survey maps, plats, and legal descriptions on behalf of the County, as directed by the County Surveyor on occasion.

Work Environment:

This position operates in an environment with moderate hazards or obstacles. There may be personal risks associated with job interactions, environmental conditions, or job pressures. The role may involve varying work environments, including outdoor tasks and exposure to inclement weather.

Physical Demands:

This position requires moderate physical effort, including the ability to carry and lift light to moderately heavy items, frequent movement, and standing for extended periods. A valid driver's license is essential for this role.

Qualifications:

Positions at this level necessitate skills and knowledge equivalent to a senior technician or para-professional. A two-year technical or vocational education beyond high school is preferred, along with 2-4 years of relevant experience. Candidates must possess the ability to identify deviations from norms and engage in initial problem-solving.

Specific qualifications include:

· A degree in land surveying or civil engineering is preferred. Candidates must have the necessary education and experience to qualify as a registered professional land surveyor in Oregon.

· A minimum of 2-4 years of professional land surveying experience, particularly in interpreting complex deeds and restoring public land corners, is required.

· Must be a registered professional land surveyor in the State of Oregon, per ORS 209.
