Job Summary and Qualifications
The Surgical Nurse First Assistant demonstrates critical thinking, scientific judgment, and leadership in planning patient care.

The Surgical Nurse First Assistant is responsible for the planning, directing, and delivery of nursing care to patients in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act, established nursing protocols, and both clinical and administrative policies.

After meeting credentialing requirements, the Surgical Nurse First Assistant assists the surgeon in ensuring safe surgical procedures with optimal patient outcomes.

The Surgical Nurse First Assistant operates under the supervision of the surgeon during the first assisting phase of surgery. The Surgical Nurse First Assistant does not perform dual roles as a scrub or circulator during this phase of care. The Surgical Nurse First Assistant also fulfills responsibilities in the perioperative nursing role when not actively assisting in surgery.
You must possess comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures, including da Vinci Robot (SI), orthopedic, neuro, and general surgery.
You will assess patients' conditions and monitor vital signs, providing general nursing care pre- and post-surgery.
You will ensure the Operating Room is equipped with all necessary supplies, implants, instruments, and equipment.
You will maintain sterilization protocols in the operating room.
You will assist surgeons by passing medical instruments during procedures.
In this role, you will review patient charts for completeness in accordance with documentation standards before and after surgical procedures.
Effective communication with patients, colleagues, and physicians is essential to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date.
- Registered Nurse licensure required.
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
- Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA), Certified First Assistant, or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA) is necessary.
