Position Overview
The Registered Nurse in the oncology department is responsible for administering various therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy, blood transfusions, radiation treatment, and bone marrow transplants. This role requires a high level of clinical expertise, utilizing evidence-based practices and research throughout the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and outcomes.

Incorporating safety protocols, cost management, and quality enhancement is essential throughout the nursing workflow. The nurse will prioritize patient, unit, and organizational needs while integrating the nursing process effectively.

Compliance with all organizational policies and procedures is mandatory, including but not limited to licensure renewal, required training, employee health screenings, attendance policies, dress code, patient confidentiality, infection control, and medication administration. Additional training and certifications may be required, such as ACLS, PALS, chemotherapy/biotherapy, and transplant/cellular therapy curriculum. Knowledge of regulatory agency standards (JCAHO, DHEC) is also necessary. Care must be provided within the framework of the SC Nursing Practice Act.

This position may involve scheduling for shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, and other direct patient care activities. 10%
  • Coordinate patient appointments for diagnostic tests, consultations, referrals, and hospital admissions. 10%
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure equipment is functioning properly. 10%
  • Document patients' vital signs and other encounter information in patient records, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete. 15%
  • Process prescription requests for patients as per physician orders. 10%
  • Prepare examination rooms with necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment, and ensure cleanliness between procedures. 5%
  • Handle clinically related phone calls, screening and forwarding those needing physician attention. 15%
  • Complete medical history forms and related information for insurance purposes. 10%
  • Notify physicians of any changes in scheduling. 5%
  • Utilize advanced nursing skills and telephone triage guidelines to assess and prioritize various conditions and symptoms. %

Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Nursing is required; a BSN is preferred.

Minimum of one year of experience as a registered nurse is required.

Licensure/Certifications

Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina.

Alternative Qualifications

In lieu of one year of registered nurse experience, successful completion of the Prisma Health Nurse Residency Program or a comparable residency from another organization will be accepted.

One year of licensed practical nurse (LPN) experience may also be considered in lieu of the registered nurse experience requirement.
