The Support Specialist (SS) II collaborates with a team to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities in achieving their objectives.

This includes routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for individuals with intellectual disabilities in diverse environments.

Responsibilities may vary and can include tasks such as grooming, bathing, feeding, observing and reporting individual conditions and behaviors, providing meaningful interactions, and participating in personalized training and/or active treatment programs for both males and females.

The SS documents relevant information regarding the individual's daily life, including responses to activities, training, and any unusual incidents.

The role requires performing simple and routine tasks, with decision-making guided by training and support from professional staff on the team.

Work occurs in a collaborative environment with supervision and training provided. The position may involve mentoring new SSs and/or volunteering as a shift/team lead. This role may also require driving a state-owned vehicle.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is essential, and you may be required to adhere to a specific shift schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shifts, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policies while performing other assigned duties.

Implements habilitation and rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs tailored to individual needs.

Teaches essential life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Participates in the formulation of the individual's treatment plan.

Monitors individuals for signs of illness, injury, medication reactions, or other conditions necessitating medical attention and accurately documents observations.

Reports significant changes in an individual's physical condition or behavior and records information as appropriate.
Assists in transporting individuals for scheduled activities and in emergencies, as needed.
Administers first aid to individuals when necessary.
Attends to the healthcare needs of individuals under the supervision of medical personnel.
Evacuates individuals during emergencies such as fires, natural disasters, or drills.
Prevents or manages aggressive behavior and administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergencies.
Provides direct care and support services to individuals.
May mentor new SSs and/or volunteer to serve as a shift/team lead.

Additional duties may include actively participating in or supporting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activation.

Such participation may require alternate shift assignments and/or locations.

Required Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in speaking and reading English.
Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment in critical situations.
Capacity to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Knowledge of proper body mechanics, good posture, and safe lifting techniques.
Familiarity with individual care techniques and treatment, therapy, and developmental programs, or the willingness to learn through training.

Ability to provide individual care, administer first aid and/or CPR, perform Ukeru (once trained), and conduct Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).

Strong communication skills and the ability to train, mentor, and coach others.
Ability to work effectively with others and as part of a team.
