Objective
As a Fresh Produce Procurement Specialist, you will oversee the ordering and receipt of products within the produce sector. Your primary responsibilities will involve placing weekly orders from various suppliers and managing incoming deliveries. You will be expected to maintain an up-to-date understanding of inventory levels and effectively balance supply and demand to ensure the department is visually appealing to customers while minimizing waste. Additionally, in the absence of the Produce Manager, you may take on additional responsibilities as assigned.
Position Details

- Flexibility is required, including availability for nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Employment Status: Non-exempt
Key Responsibilities
- Timely receipt of produce shipments by prioritizing tasks to maximize product freshness:
- First, ensure highly perishable and out-of-stock items are addressed.
- Next, process greens by placing them in water.
- Lastly, handle items that are stable at room temperature.
- Accurately document invoices with necessary counts, credits, and special orders.
- Properly input received invoices into the Point-of-Sale system.
- Foster positive relationships with all produce vendors through professional interactions.
- Place necessary produce orders by established deadlines.
- Collaborate with the Produce Manager to design seasonal displays and promotions.
- Compile a weekly produce waste log and adjust inventory in the Point-of-Sale system accordingly.
- Assist in completing quarterly inventory by the designated deadlines.
- When feasible, visit local vendors to gain insights into their practices.
- Review and acknowledge the Produce Department Procedures Binder annually.
Operational Duties
- Check the Produce whiteboard daily for departmental updates.
- Communicate effectively with incoming team members at the end of each shift by leaving notes regarding back stock situations or outstanding tasks.
- Maintain communication with the Produce Manager through notes in the inbox.
- Regularly stock and cull the department every half hour to ensure visual appeal.
- Fill display gaps by rearranging items as necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness in the front-end area by performing spot cleaning tasks as needed.
- Moisten open greens in the cooler to preserve shelf life.
- Ensure all products are properly labeled with price tags aligned to the correct items.
- Label all back stock items with names and dates.
- Accurately dispose of all culled produce, placing it in the appropriate bins.
- Wash all produce-related dishes before the end of your shift.
- Complete the required checklist at the end of your shift and submit it.
- Keep the back room clean by tidying counters and sweeping floors as necessary.
- Arrive punctually and prepared for work.
- Adhere to company policy regarding dress code, including wearing an apron and name tag, tying back long hair, and wearing closed-toe shoes when handling produce.
- Review and sign the Communication Log weekly.
- Utilize computers solely for job-related tasks, avoiding personal accounts or logins.
- Receive invoices, adjust buttons, print labels, or modify prices as needed.
- Obtain price lists for ordering through the designated produce email account.
- Educate on produce-related topics only when a second staff member is available to oversee the floor.
- Complete assigned training only when a second staff member is available to oversee the floor.
