Patient Service Specialist

As a Patient Service Specialist, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of our SMG physician practice. This position requires a professional, positive manner when interacting with patients, either in-person, over the phone, or via email.
Key Responsibilities:- Answer and route telephone calls appropriately, taking messages and ensuring that the relevant physician or staff member receives the information.
- Provide routine information to callers and only authorized medical advice from a provider.
- Offer a high level of customer service to all new and existing patients of the practice.
- Create patient cases and document telephone calls and messages into Athena or other EMR.
- Schedule patient appointments and appropriate testing for patients as requested.
- Register patients in EMR and verify information, including demographics and accurate health insurance information.
- Conduct eligibility checks to ensure insurance is reflected accurately.
- Collect required insurance co-pays from patients, including any prior balances.
- Follow scheduling notes and direct schedules patient visits in other SMG practices as advised.
- Perform pre-visit planning daily for all upcoming scheduled appointments, including running insurance eligibility.
- Responsible to obtain prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need.
- Perform outreach to select patient groups as directed for patient care and quality measurement/guidelines.
- Schedule specialty appointments/testing as required.
- Perform work in EMR buckets as directed and per practice need.
- Responsible to inform manager of administrative supply needs or assists with ordering.
- Follow up with providers on missing slips and creates claims in Athena.
- Responsible to work assigned revenue cycle buckets as directed.
This role requires strong customer service excellence, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently with little supervision. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and one to three years of experience as a medical secretary is preferred. Experience with EMR, particularly Athena, and Microsoft Office is also highly valued.
