Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Field Service Technician is a critical role at Carolina CAT, responsible for delivering exceptional service to our customers by troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing their heavy equipment in a shop or field environment. This position requires a high level of productivity and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Review work schedules, check equipment and supplies, and prepare for operations at the start of each shift.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, using problem-solving techniques and repair options for Caterpillar machines, engines, and components.
- Determine the technical or physical status of equipment using on-board computers, service documents, and product improvement programs.
- Verify findings, review readings of gauges and procedures, and compare to manufacturer specifications.
- Develop a plan to correct problems, consulting with colleagues or lead technicians when necessary.
- Order or obtain parts from stock or send them to special service shops for tooling or alterations.
- Install, replace, rebuild, or repair parts and equipment in a timely manner and according to specifications.
- Test parts or equipment and perform quality checks after completion.
- Paint components and pressure wash parts and equipment when necessary.
- Perform general housekeeping duties and maintain company vehicles.
- Secure equipment and machinery at the end of each shift and complete required paperwork.
- Ensure departmental compliance with safety and contamination control guidelines.
- Maintain productivity at predetermined levels.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications:
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of the level three service technician development program.
- At least 6 years of experience in heavy equipment, engine, or electric power generation system mechanic repair.
- Comprehensive knowledge of engine and equipment lines sold by Caterpillar.
- Knowledge of Caterpillar diagnostic tools and their applications.
- Electrical and electronic system applications.
- Problem-solving techniques and repair options for Caterpillar machines, engines, and components.
Computer Skills
The ideal candidate should possess basic keyboarding skills.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and/or otherwise move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must operate equipment in a safe manner.
