Military School Counselor Job Description

This position is part of a team supporting various schools affiliated with Fort Drum. The ideal candidate will be local to Fort Drum and hold a valid, independent licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Therapist (LMFT), Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide non-medical, short-term counseling services to eligible children and youth of service members at assigned locations.
  • Support staff and personnel of DoDEA, community schools, and summer camps, as well as provide parent training and guidance.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with community resources focused on children and youth, ensuring appropriate linkages.
  • Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with installation/facility POCs, ensuring effective collaboration.
  • Manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to DoD protocol, staffed with Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
  • Communicate with Regional Supervisor and participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues on installations and facilities.
  • Participate in regular in-services/training, Quality Improvement committees, initiatives, studies, pilot programs, and other contract activities as assigned/appropriate.
Requirements:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited Graduate Program in a Mental Health-related field.
  • Valid, unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, District of Columbia, US Territory, or Commonwealth.
  • A minimum of two years of post-licensure clinical experience.
  • Intermediate-level competencies in technology and software, including Microsoft Suite, Internet navigation, Smartphone/Tablet, and video-conferencing platform navigation.
  • Ability to engage and communicate with military members or children, respond quickly to emergent situations, and work in various physical locations on a military installation and/or within a school setting.
  • Ability to prove US Citizenship and be fluent in English.
  • Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for children, service members, and their families, with the ability to develop trusting, helping relationships.
  • Pass a Child National Agency Check and Inquiries (CNACI) Clearance and an Installation Records Check (IRC), Criminal History Background Check, and FBI Fingerprints Check.
