Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Billing Specialist to join our team at UC Davis Health System. As a key member of our Professional Billing Group, you will be responsible for providing billing and follow-up functions for the Government unit within our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • 30% - Appeals: You will be responsible for handling appeals and ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed and submitted in a timely manner.
  • 30% - Account Follow-Up: You will be responsible for following up on outstanding accounts and ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to resolve any issues.
  • 20% - Teamwork/Accountability: You will work closely with our team to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • 20% - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: You will be responsible for maintaining and updating your knowledge and skills to ensure that you are up-to-date on all relevant medical billing and coding requirements.
Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of Medi-Cal, CCS and Medi-Cal Managed Care Plans
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicare Risk, Tricare and VA Plans
  • Extensive knowledge of medical billing/follow-up/reimbursement requirements and procedures for government programs, private third party insurance and private individuals
  • Solid working knowledge in Epic Professional Billing Resolute
  • Ability to analyze and interpret various types of Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and Remittance Advice (RA)
  • Analytical skills to assess account balances and make determination/decision on further action
  • Knowledge of medical terminology in order to correlate reports to actual charges and to determine appropriateness of denials
  • General knowledge of credit and collection practices
  • Knowledge of basic accounting practices
  • Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Insurance Classification of Disease (ICD-10) policies related to medical billing
  • Math skills to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide
  • Ability to read and comprehend department policy, internal and external correspondence
  • Writing skills to effectively compose internal and external correspondence
  • Proofreading skills to identify and correct own errors
  • Communication skills to appropriately respond to account inquiries, both in person and over the telephone, and communicate effectively with all internal and external customers
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with employees and Administration
  • Ability to work accurately and quickly under pressure in order to meet deadlines established by the department, government programs, or private insurance carriers
  • Ability to be flexible in a quickly changing environment
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Keyboarding skills to effectively operate computer terminal and P.C.; prepare internal and external correspondence and forms as required
  • Ability to effectively operate standard office equipment including but not limited to photocopier, scanner, fax, calculator
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate files on patient financial information
  • Ability to file in alphabetical, numerical, and chronological order
