Job Title: Research Associate

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join our team at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. As a Research Associate, you will play a key role in testing and characterizing the prototype ngVLA 18m reflector antenna.

Job Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a world-renowned research and development organization that operates a variety of radio telescopes. We are currently designing the Next-Generation VLA (ngVLA), a new facility that will offer an order-of-magnitude advance over the current VLA and VLBA. As a Research Associate, you will be responsible for testing and characterizing the prototype ngVLA 18m reflector antenna, which will be located at the VLA site.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute test observations to characterize antenna performance, including surface accuracy and efficiency, pointing/focus, and beam shape.
  • Test antenna performance in various weather conditions, including thermal and wind.
  • Apply single-dish (radiometric) and interferometric methods for testing.
  • Develop necessary data analysis procedures.
  • Interact with other engineers and scientists to troubleshoot system issues.
  • Contribute to calibration strategies under development for ngVLA.
  • Carry out a program of independent astronomical research.
  • Debug prototype failures and assist the engineering and maintenance teams.
  • Capture recommendations for the final design of the ngVLA antenna.
Requirements
  • PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in radio astronomy instrumentation, development, and/or commissioning is preferred.
  • Experience with standard radio astronomy data reduction software (CASA, etc.).
  • Attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Fluency in the English language.
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentations and writing technical reports.

The starting salary for this position is between $62,000 and $65,000, depending on factors such as education, experience, skills, and internal equity.

AUI provides excellent paid time off, medical, dental, and vision plans, and a retirement benefit that contributes an amount equal to 10 percent of a qualified participant's base pay.
