GI Hospitalist – Opportunities Available

Benefis Medical Group is seeking to enhance its established GI hospitalist practice. This role is available in Great Falls, Montana, catering to a diverse patient population of 80,000 residents in the city and an additional 275,000 across the surrounding regions.

The current team consists of 2 traditional GI Physicians, 2 full-time GI Hospitalists (with one transitioning), several per diem GI Hospitalists, 1 Inpatient PA-C, and 2 outpatient Advanced Practice Providers. Candidates must be board eligible or certified, with ERCP proficiency required.

  • Flexible sigmoidoscopies
  • PEG tube placements

Work Schedule:

  • Full-time position entails 146 shifts annually (approximately 20.8 weeks), while part-time consists of 73 shifts (around 10.4 weeks).
    • Flexible scheduling: full-time partner physician typically works 3 weeks on, followed by 5 weeks off.
  • Average case load of 6 cases per day (ranging from 2 to 9).
  • Support from an experienced PA-C for consults and rounding.
  • Dedicated Monday to Friday block for urgent/emergent procedures, with a specific Sunday block from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm for weekend cases.
  • Optional outpatient lab time available during off weeks, though not mandatory.

Endoscopy Facilities:

  • Five endoscopy suites and one bronchoscopy suite conveniently located near the ER and main OR.
  • 10-bed recovery unit with advanced Olympus equipment.
  • Supportive staff of RNs and technicians.
  • Anesthesia services available, with a dedicated suite for GI Hospitalists.
  • Designed as an ambulatory surgical center, managing all patients within the unit, with occasional procedures in the OR based on BMI.

Future Developments:

  • Expansion plans for a new space within the hospital, set to complete in August 2024, increasing from 9,000 SF to 22,000 SF.
  • New facilities will include eight endoscopy suites, 10 pre-op, and 14 post-op areas.
  • Continued use of Olympus equipment and experienced staff support.

Call Coverage:

The GI Hospitalist team covers gastroenterology calls, allowing traditional physicians to maintain high-volume practices. The typical in-house hours for GI Hospitalists are from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays, with rounds on Saturdays and procedures on Sundays during a dedicated block. While the position includes 24-hour call, the ER and ICU teams generally defer urgent GI cases until morning, minimizing late-night calls.
