Our Emergency Department is recognized as a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and serves as a dedicated pediatric burn center. Each year, our experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and neonatal medicine provide exceptional care to thousands of children across our main facility and multiple ambulatory sites.

Position Overview

Under the guidance of Medical Directors and the Patient Care Services Transport Manager, the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive, safe, and effective medical care to patients transported by the CHM Critical Care Transport Team, PANDA One, utilizing both ground and air ambulance services.

This role involves applying specialized techniques and procedures to ensure patient safety and effective response to critical situations. The nurse will conduct thorough assessments of patients' health status, both physical and emotional, and initiate appropriate interventions as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform procedures unique to the transport function, including:
    • Oral Endotracheal Intubation
    • Maintenance of Endotracheal Tubes
    • LMA Insertion and Maintenance
    • Emergent Cricothyrotomy
    • Tracheostomy Tube Management
    • Effective Ambubag Mask Ventilation
    • Initiation and Maintenance of Mechanical Ventilation
    • Administration of Oxygen, Nitric Oxide, and Heliox
    • Conduct Resuscitation as per established protocols
    • Establish Venous Access through various methods
    • Interpret Laboratory Reports and Radiographic Studies
    • Needle Decompression of Pneumothorax
    • Conduct Septic Work-ups
    • Defibrillation and Cardioversion
    • Ventilator Management
    • Whole Body Cooling for Neonatal HIE Patients

The nurse will coordinate and oversee the activities of non-nursing team members during transport, ensuring all patient care information is documented accurately. Communication with patients, families, and healthcare professionals regarding patient conditions and progress is essential.

Additionally, the nurse will maintain transport equipment and supplies, report any issues to the Patient Care Services Manager, and contribute to the overall evaluation and improvement of the transport program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or be currently enrolled in a BSN program.
  • A valid Michigan nursing license.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, or level 1 pediatric trauma.
  • Current employment in a pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, or level 1 pediatric trauma setting.
  • A valid passport or enhanced driver's license, or eligibility to apply for one.
Required Certifications
  • BLS
  • NRP
  • PALS
  • ACLS or completion during orientation
  • C-NPT or completion within one year of hire
  • ABLS or completion during orientation
