Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing the Youth Services division, planning and implementing children's programs, and supervising staff. The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Library Science and experience in youth services in a library environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the Youth Services division, including planning and implementing children's programs
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff
  • Participate in interviewing and selecting new employees and volunteers
  • Determine work schedules and submit budget requests
  • Administer operational supplies for the division
  • Assist with grant proposals and monitor grant funds
  • Direct special projects and report writing
  • Responsible for division statistics and customer service
  • May be the Person in Charge on nights and/or weekends at the Main Library
  • Participate in meetings and activities with outside agencies and organizations
  • Organize and supervise Youth programs, such as story times, puppet shows, and craft programs
  • Plan and implement workshops for public and staff
  • Develop and create promotional materials, such as flyers and brochures
  • Provide customer service and reference service at the Youth Information Desk
  • Responsible for collection development and book selection
  • Compile bibliographies and plan tours and speeches for public and private schools
  • Serve as a liaison for the Library District's branch libraries
  • Utilize social media to promote the Library
  • Create displays to promote library use
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years of experience in youth services in a library environment
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Valid driver's license
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Principles and practices of modern librarianship
  • Youth psychology relating to public library services
  • Library information tools, including print resources and computer databases
  • Children's and young adult authors, materials, and selection tools
  • Children and young adult reader interest levels
  • Principles and practices of supervision
  • Computer operations and automated systems
  • Providing effective customer-oriented service
  • Providing instruction in the use of computer and print information resources
  • Conducting research using computerized databases and the internet
  • Supervising the work of others
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, and/or kneeling; and significant fine finger dexterity; generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking and 20% standing; working at a computer monitor for extended periods required; the job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under extreme likelihood of verbal abuse from hostile and frustrated customers.
