About the Role

The California Department of Justice is seeking highly skilled attorneys to join the Appeals, Writs, and Trials Section of the Criminal Law Division in Los Angeles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze complex legal issues related to felony criminal appeals, juvenile delinquency appeals, and related writs before the state Courts of Appeal and the California Supreme Court.
  • Write persuasive briefs and orally advocate on behalf of the People of California in court.
  • Handle cases involving challenging legal issues, including constitutional issues, complex evidentiary and statutory issues, and appeals involving issues of first impression.
  • Respond to habeas corpus litigation in the United States District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
  • Participate in frequent oral arguments in the California Court of Appeal, as well as occasional appearances in the California Supreme Court, the United States District Court, Central District of California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Requirements

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Strong legal research and writing ability.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of criminal laws and procedures.
  • Courtroom advocacy experience.
  • Ability to travel as required.
