Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Attorney General III to join our Employment Law Section at the California Department of Justice. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in handling complex civil employment cases, providing expert advice to state agencies, and defending the operations of over 100 critical state agencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complex Civil Employment Cases: Independently handle all aspects of complex civil employment cases, including drafting and arguing motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting and defending depositions and other discovery, preparing and arguing summary judgment motions, expert discovery, and preparing for trial.
  • Jury and Bench Trials: Handle jury and bench trials, ensuring that our clients receive fair and just outcomes.
  • Administrative Evidentiary Hearings: Handle contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board, providing expert advice and representation to our clients.
  • Appellate Briefs: Draft and argue appellate briefs before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit, ensuring that our clients' rights are protected.
  • Client Communication: Communicate effectively with clients, providing detailed case analyses and recommendations to ensure that they are informed and empowered throughout the legal process.
  • Training and Guidance: Provide training, guidance, and advice to state agencies on a variety of employment and personnel matters, helping them to navigate complex legal issues and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work cooperatively, professionally, and effectively with colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients to achieve our goals and objectives.
Requirements
  • California Residency: Must reside in California.
  • California State Bar Membership: Must be an active member in good standing of the California State Bar.
  • Telework Options: May choose to telework or come into the office, with some in-office attendance required for meetings, court appearances, or other operational reasons.
