Position Overview

Are you passionate about safeguarding the vitality of marine life, particularly shellfish species such as oysters, crabs, and sea stars? This role at the Department of Fish and Wildlife offers an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in shellfish research and cultivation methodologies. As a member of our team, you will acquire essential skills for evaluating shellfish health, which includes performing examinations and diagnosing diseases using advanced techniques like qPCR and microbiology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent animal necropsies while ensuring proper sample preservation and thorough data collection and analysis.
  • Collaborate in the formulation of diagnostic protocols for emerging aquatic animal pathogens to enhance management strategies.
  • Engage in field assessments of shellfish farming operations and aquaria across various locations.
  • Support experienced staff in a wide array of tasks related to health and disease management of both cultivated and wild shellfish populations.
  • Assist in the management of research and public holding systems for exotic species, focusing on recovery efforts for endangered species.
  • Maintain aquatic life support systems for shellfish, which includes filter upkeep, tank siphoning, and algae collection and feeding.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks such as cleaning glassware, autoclaving waste, and managing supply orders.
  • Collaborate on research initiatives centered on shellfish health and disease ecology.

Work Environment

The role encompasses a variety of working conditions, including: standing for extended periods while processing samples, sitting for prolonged durations to enter and analyze data, and working in diverse environments such as dry labs, wet labs, and field sites, including rocky intertidal zones and shellfish farms.

Special Requirements

A valid California driver's license is required for this position.
