Position: Registered Nurse (PRN)

Role Summary:

Under the supervision of the department's Director or designated representative, this role is responsible for assessing, planning, organizing, and evaluating comprehensive patient care for designated units and patients.

Reporting Structure: Reports to Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Employs the nursing process to deliver high-quality patient care in accordance with established care standards, which encompasses planning, executing, assessing, and modifying care plans, as well as discharge planning based on anticipated patient outcomes.
  2. Facilitates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  3. Conducts ongoing patient evaluations and documents findings in compliance with policy.
  4. Creates individualized patient care plans that address patient issues, objectives, evaluations, and interventions.
  5. Communicates significant changes in patient conditions to appropriate team members promptly.
  6. Evaluates and coordinates discharge planning needs and readiness for discharge with the multidisciplinary care team.

Age-Specific Care:

  1. Adheres to age-specific standards when administering medications based on the patient's age.
  2. Implements age-specific care protocols during altered states of consciousness due to analgesia, conscious sedation, or anesthesia.
  3. Utilizes age-specific guidelines to perform routine treatments and procedures based on the patient's age.

Cultural Competence:

  1. In collaboration with patients and families, implements care plans in a culturally and developmentally appropriate manner.
  2. Demonstrates proficiency in providing nursing care according to established nursing standards, considering developmental appropriateness.

Critical Thinking and Delegation:

  1. Exhibits critical thinking abilities and delegates tasks to staff based on patient assessments and care delivery requirements, ensuring safe and effective care that maximizes positive patient outcomes.

Documentation:

  1. Maintains accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with established nursing standards.

Collaboration:

  1. Works collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare team members to educate patients and families about disease processes, wellness promotion, and discharge planning.
  2. Assesses patient and family learning needs, preferences, and readiness to learn.
  3. Utilizes a collaborative approach to provide effective patient and family education.
  4. Evaluates the effectiveness of educational interventions and adjusts teaching strategies as necessary.

Performance Improvement:

  1. Engages in performance improvement initiatives, including data collection and analysis to identify measurable outcomes that maintain quality and promote desired results.
  2. Participates in the development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policies, and problem-solving teams.

Research Awareness:

  1. Demonstrates awareness of research relevance in nursing and evaluates practices to identify areas for improvement or research opportunities.

Communication:

  1. Effectively utilizes departmental communication tools to stay informed and engage with the healthcare team.
  2. Accesses departmental email regularly to manage communications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.

Licensure and Certification: Current state license as a registered nurse; current CPR certification; ACLS, PALS, or TNCC certifications as required by policy.

Experience: Previous experience as a registered nurse in a related care area is preferred.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds while providing patient care; stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching; standing and walking for five (5) or more hours daily; reaching, grasping, and handling for five (5) or more hours daily. Visual acuity is necessary to distinguish skin tone variations, detect IV infiltration, and read telemetry and blood pressure gauges; auditory acuity is required to identify various body sounds and discern sounds from medical equipment.

Work Environment:

Exposure to environmental hazards such as chemicals, needles, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases may occur. Protective clothing and equipment may be necessary.

Immunization Requirements:

Compliance with immunization and vaccination requirements as per healthcare regulations is mandatory.
