The Laboratory Assistant plays a vital role in the clinical laboratory, responsible for collecting and processing specimens, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies. Key Responsibilities
  1. Collect and process patient specimens, including blood and non-blood samples, in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  2. Verify and enter patient registration data and test orders into the hospital information system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  3. Process specimens according to established guidelines, maintaining quality and timeliness standards.
  4. Maintain a safe and clean working environment, adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies to protect patients and employees.
  5. Perform waived tests and assist in other testing platforms with technical oversight, ensuring accurate results and quality control.
  6. Assist in quality control and performance improvement activities, contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes.
  7. Ensure standards are met in quality, timeliness, customer service, and other areas, maintaining a high level of professionalism and expertise.
  8. Orient and train new staff members, providing guidance and support to ensure a smooth transition.
  9. Assist in ensuring compliance with regulatory and other agency requirements, laws, and statutes pertaining to the operation of the department.
  10. Answer telephone calls, perform computer tasks, print reports, and provide test results as applicable, maintaining effective communication with patients, staff, and external partners.
  11. Perform therapeutic phlebotomies, dispatch and manage specimens and slides for consults, referrals, and other requests, and create transport lists for tracking.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certified as a phlebotomy technician or previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in an approved program preferred.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment preferred.
Position Specific Expectations
  1. Problem-solving capabilities and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  2. Must follow AIDET for all patient encounters.
  3. Valid Michigan driver's license and a driver's record approved by the Medical Center's insurance agent for those employees who drive a vehicle as a requirement for the job (if applicable).
  4. Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in an approved program.
  5. CPR issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross Certification.
