Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Law Enforcement Officer to join our team at La Crosse County Sheriff's Office. As a Patrol Deputy, you will be responsible for maintaining law and order, enforcing laws and regulations, and providing excellent customer service to the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol designated areas to detect and apprehend violators of motor vehicle laws and criminal laws
  • Operate law enforcement vehicle for long periods of time during day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents and emergency situations, lift, drag, and carry people away from dangerous situations, provide first aid, order wreckers and ambulances, and aid accident victims, stranded motorists, and disabled vehicles
  • Direct and escort traffic when necessary, escort emergency and other vehicles such as oversize loads
  • Observe and check business and other property for unlocked doors or signs of criminal activity
  • Investigate accidents or criminal complaints received concerning violations of the law within guidelines of the department, investigate citizen complaints including suspected criminal activity, animal complaints, domestic disturbances, noise
  • Prepare reports and handle related paperwork
  • Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons
  • Make arrests and apprehend suspects, effecting the arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints, subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons, and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense
  • Protect scenes of crimes and collect and preserve evidence for investigative units, prepare evidence for court hearings and trials pursuant to established procedures, attend court whenever necessary to provide testimony and other evidence
  • Conduct video and audio surveillance for extended periods of time
  • Extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means
  • Assist all Law Enforcement agencies as needed
  • Serve civil and criminal processes, including sales upon executions, lawful seizures of goods, garnishments, etc., make proper return of all processes served and reports the service made
  • Maintain and check police and personal equipment such as radios, cameras, firearms, handcuffs, uniforms, squad car, and related equipment
  • Prepare reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree
  • Effectively communicate with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes
  • Communicate clearly while testifying in courts or other formal settings
  • Load, unload, aim, and fire from a variety of body positions handguns, rifles, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards
  • Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants
Requirements
  • Must have completed the Basic Police Certification Training in Wisconsin within the last three years, or already be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board
  • Requires a minimum of 60 fully accredited college-level credits
  • Must pass criminal background check suitable for working in law enforcement, which includes no felony convictions and no convictions for domestic abuse
  • Must pass character background investigation as required by the Wis. Law Enforcement Standards Board
  • Must be a citizen of the United States, be a resident of the State of Wisconsin on the date employment is commenced, and maintain that residency
  • Must have five years of previous driving experience, have and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license, and a good driving record
  • Successful candidates for the position must pass a physical and psychological examination and drug screening
